In our history this week we have studies some about the prophet Hosea and his wife Gomer. What a picture of the Lord’s gracious loving dealings with His people. The Lord told Hosea to go out and get a wife who was a whore, going out continually after other lovers. This was a picture of the Israelites treachery against their God in going out after other gods. Yet, as Hosea went out and kept receiving back his wife, evening purchasing her back at his expense, so our God continually was calling back His people to repentance, even purchasing her with His own blood. I have been struck as I have taught his at the sweet love and condescension of our Lord. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. How this picture of such sweet love should melt us!
Also today we learned of Hezekiah and how his godliness and trust in God kept the kingdom of Judah from being captured by the Assyrian army. What a contrast to Israel’s (the northern kingdom) unrepentance and being led away captive. Judah was spared and mightily delivered by the Lord.
Alongside the biblical history we have still the study of ancient Rome and how she was founded. We also have jumped ahead a bit to when Rome was an empire and Pompeii was destroyed by the volcano on Mt Vesuvius. We then came here to the computer and were able to see live webcam shots of Mt Vesuvius as well as other youtubes of videos of volcanoes erupting. I continue to be amazed at how the internet helps our homeschooling. To be able to type into google almost anything and see it for yourself is such a tool.
Tomorrow we will be studying the Ancient Native Americans. Did you know that while Hezekiah was King over Judah (700 BC ) there were Native Americans over here in our own United States! I did not know that…how cool is that??
