This is good stuff...

A friend of mine posted this on his blog...good stuff!
Diary of Cotton Mather, 1681-1724, Vol. 1 (1681-1709), pp. 534-537:

Some Special Points, Relating To The Education Of MyChildren.

I. I pour out continual Prayers and Cries to the God of all Grace for them, that He will be a Father to my Children, and bestow His Christ and His Grace upon them, and guide them with His Councils, and bring them to His Glory.

And in this Action, I mention them distinctly, every one by Name unto the Lord.

II. I begin betimes to entertain them with delightful Stories, especially scriptural ones. And still conclude with some Lesson of Piety; bidding them to learn that Lessonfrom the Story.

And thus, every Day at the Table, I have used myself to tell a Story before I rise; and make the Story useful to theOlive Plants about the Table.

III. When the Children at any time accidentally come in my way, it is my custome to lett fall some Sentence or other, that may be monitory and profitable to them.

This Matter proves to me, a Matter of some Study, and Labour, and Contrivance. But who can tell, what may be the Effect of a continual Dropping?

IV. I essay betimes, to engage the Children, in Exercises of Piety; and especially secret Prayer, for which I give them very plain and brief Directions, and suggest unto them thePetitions, which I would have them to make before the Lord, and which I therefore explain to their Apprehension and Capacity. And I often call upon them; Child, Don't you forgett every Day, to go alone, and pray as I have directed you I

V. Betimes I try to form in the Children a Temper ofBenignity. I putt them upon doing of Services and Kindnesses for one another, and for other Children. I applaud them, when I see them Delight in it; I upbraid all Aversion to it. I caution them exquisitely against all Revenges of Injuries. I instruct them, to return good Offices for evil Ones. I show them, how they will by this Goodnessbecome like to the Good GOD, and His Glorious CHRIST. I lett them discern, that I am not satisfied, except when they have a Sweetness of Temper shining in them.

VI. As soon as tis possible, I make the Children learn towrite. And when they can write, I employ them in Writing out the most agreeable and profitable Things, that I can invent for them. In this way, I propose to fraight their minds with excellent Things, and have a deep Impression made upon their Minds by such Things.

VII. I mightily endeavour it, that the Children may betimes, be acted by Principles of Reason and Honour.

I first begett in them an high Opinion of their Father's Love to them, and of his being best able to judge, what shall be good for them.

Then I make them sensible, tis a Folly for them to pretend unto any Witt and Will of their own; they must resign all to me, who will be sure to do what is best; my word must be their Law.

I cause them to understand, that it is an hurtful and ashameful thing to do amiss. I aggravate this, on all Occasions; and lett them see how amiable they will render themselves by well doing.

The first Chastisement, which I inflict for an ordinary Fault, is, to lett the Child see and hear me in an Astonishment, and hardly able to beleeve that the Child could do so base a Thing, but beleeving that they will never do it again.

I would never come, to give a child a Blow; except in Case of Obstinacy: or some gross Enormity.

To be chased for a while out of my Presence, I would make to be look'd upon, as the sorest Punishment in the Family.

I would by all possible Insinuations gain this Point upon them, that for them to learn all the brave Things in the world, is the bravest Thing in the world. I am not fond of proposing Play to them, as a Reward of any diligent Application to learn what is good; lest they should thinkDiversion to be a better and a nobler Thing than Diligence.

I would have them come to propound and expect, at this rate, / have done well, and now / will go to my Father; He will teach me some curious Thing for it. I must have them count it a Priviledge, to be taught; and I sometimes manage the Matter so, that my Refusing to teach them Something, is their Punishment.

The slavish way of Education, carried on with raving and kicking and scourging (in Schools as well as Families,) tis abominable; and a dreadful Judgment of God upon the World.

VIII. Tho' I find it a marvellous Advantage to have the Children strongly biased by Principles of Reason andHonour, (which, I find, Children will feel sooner than is commonly thought for:) yett I would neglect no Endeavours, to have higher Principles infused into them.

I therefore betimes awe them with the Eye of God upon them.

I show them, how they must love JESUS CHRIST; and show it, by doing what their Parents require of them.

I often tell them of the good Angels, who love them, and help them, and guard them; and who take Notice of them: and therefore must not be disobliged.

Heaven and Hell, I sett before them, as the Consequences of their Behaviour here.

IX. When the Children are capable of it, I take them alone, one by one; and after my Charges unto them, to fear God, and serve Christ, and shun Sin, / pray with them in my Study and make them the Witnesses of the Agonies, with which I address the Throne of Grace on their behalf.

X. I find much Benefit, by a particular Method, as ofCotechising the Children, so of carrying the Repetition of the public Sermons unto them.

The Answers of the Catechism I still explain with abundance of brief Quaestions, which make them to take in the Meaning of it, and I see, that they do so.

And when the Sermons are to be Repeated, I chuse to putt every Truth, into a Question, to be answered still, with,Yes, or, No. In this way I awaken their Attention, as well as enlighten their Understanding. And in this way I have an Opportunity, to ask, Do you desire such, or such a Grace of God? and the like. Yea, I have an Opportunity to demand, and perhaps, to obtain their Consent unto the glorious Articles of the New Covenant. The Spirit of Grace may fall upon them in this Action; and they may be siez'd by Him, and Held as His Temples, thro' eternal Ages.

Very informative...

There is a fungus among us...

It is a beautiful day here in SC and I was itching to be outside a little. A friend of mine in the UK put me on to an offer by the Woodland Trust nature detectives club that I could join free. We get packets in the mail with different projects and ideas in it for science. I have not done the ones I got in the past, but this time we have put it to use and it was great. We learned about fungi and how it was not a plant or animal. The children learned how their antibiotics come from fungi and how yeast and mold are also fungi. We then took our fungi flash cards outside to seek to identify the many mushrooms and fungi that are growing outside. The children eagerly jumped into it and we identified (to our laymans eyes) what looked like the common puffball, common birds nest, chicken of the woods, King Alfred's cakes and penny buns. Do you know that a King Alfred's cake can be used like charcoal to start a fire? Each of the cards tell what toxicity level it was from 0-10. I was able to reiterate to the little ones that we do not touch any mushrooms! We all really enjoyed the excursion.

Happy Birthday to my Daddy and Brother!

Happy Birthday to my dear Father and brother!
We love you both so much! As the children were making cards, E had made and acrostic of the word, GRANDPA. She says, I already made my "stick"! I thought that was so cute! They are busy making cards this morning. I wish I could communicate with my dear brother today. It is a big birthday for him..21. But, because he is at boot camp, there is no ability to communicate other than letters. I hope that he knows we love and miss him, and are thinking of him today.

Its a busy week here at the E home. We had friends over from church on the Lord's Day. Their transmission on their vehicle started acting up again, so they ended up staying the night and then most of the day yesterday. We enjoyed being with them, and schooled together yesterday. Last night we had our pastoral home visit which is always a huge blessing. We enjoyed the visit so much. I served a blueberry pie, they loved the crust, which is Nona's recipe. Tonight we are getting together with Dad for his bday. Tomorrow night is church. Either before church Wed night or Thurs. we are going muscadine picking at the vineyard. Do you remember me posting last year about the huge vineyard near our house that we were so warmly received at? We get to go again this year. S wants to make even more of that wonderful muscadine wine...it was so delicious! Then Friday night S and I are having a double date with some friends from church. There is a Christian film showing called The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry. Gavin MacLeod (from the old TV series The Love Boat) has an amazing testimony of how the Lord converted him. He starred in the movie Time Changer, which is a phenomenal film. Now the same producers have made The Secret of Jonathan Sperry, with Gavin MacLeod again. So, we are going to go for dinner and movie with our friends on Friday night. I am REALLY looking forward to it.

I was thinking about how the Lord is using the different ladies in my church as such a blessing to me. They each have their different strengths that illustrate the body of Christ. There is JP who is going to come on Friday mornings and we are going to teach our children Latin together. There is SV who called me yesterday and was such an encouragement. There is LW who is going to do weight watchers again with me. There is WA who is my scrapbooking buddy (even though we have not had time for it) There is SD who comes once or twice a week to help me in the home, and comes each Lord's Day evening with her brothers for fellowship. So many, many women God is putting in my life as a blessing to me. I could go on and on. We truly are like a body, each having their strengths and places within the church.

So that's an update from the homefront. We have the windows open and it is a beautiful day! Gotta go and make some lunch for this crew now.

History Lesson

In our history this week we have studies some about the prophet Hosea and his wife Gomer. What a picture of the Lord’s gracious loving dealings with His people. The Lord told Hosea to go out and get a wife who was a whore, going out continually after other lovers. This was a picture of the Israelites treachery against their God in going out after other gods. Yet, as Hosea went out and kept receiving back his wife, evening purchasing her back at his expense, so our God continually was calling back His people to repentance, even purchasing her with His own blood. I have been struck as I have taught his at the sweet love and condescension of our Lord. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. How this picture of such sweet love should melt us!

Also today we learned of Hezekiah and how his godliness and trust in God kept the kingdom of Judah from being captured by the Assyrian army. What a contrast to Israel’s (the northern kingdom) unrepentance and being led away captive. Judah was spared and mightily delivered by the Lord.

Alongside the biblical history we have still the study of ancient Rome and how she was founded. We also have jumped ahead a bit to when Rome was an empire and Pompeii was destroyed by the volcano on Mt Vesuvius. We then came here to the computer and were able to see live webcam shots of Mt Vesuvius as well as other youtubes of videos of volcanoes erupting. I continue to be amazed at how the internet helps our homeschooling. To be able to type into google almost anything and see it for yourself is such a tool.

Tomorrow we will be studying the Ancient Native Americans. Did you know that while Hezekiah was King over Judah (700 BC ) there were Native Americans over here in our own United States! I did not know that…how cool is that??

For the record

This is to set the record straight about something that would not ever happen in our family…no, not ever. Our three year old is not a little fireball who keeps us all on our toes…no not us. She does not have another little three year old friend at church. They are not inseparable when together…nope. They do not play and run around holding hands grinning all the time. Never. They also never come up with mischievous plans together…shaking head. They did not, could not have possibly ever decided to go into the men’s room at the church yesterday. The absolutely did not decide to dunk their little girly heads in the toilets of the men’s bathroom yesterday…NOPE! They did not saturate their little heads, and daddy did not find them standing there dripping like little rats in the men’s room. It did not cause a stir at church and make both mama’s run for soap to wash their hair in the sinks of the ladies room. They did not wear wet dresses home. No, these things would never happen in the E household. Nope, never…just for the record. Thank you. Just needed to set that straight.

Have you lost your marbles?

I know you all have heard the term “losing your marbles” but in our house it has a different meaning. We lose but we also gain marbles. You see, marbles are our new motivational system around here. Certain chores are worth a certain number of marbles. When chores are done—right away, all the way, with a cheerful, happy heart, then we get to add marbles to our jar. When the jar is up to a certain mark then…we all get a treat out to get ice cream!

Now what child (or adult for that matter) isn’t excited about that? I have a sheet with our chores and how much each marble is worth, but I retain the right as mother to change or add the chores or marble values. If a room is extra bad I might increase it’s marble value. On the other hand, if there are attitude or obedience issues, I can tell them that they lose a marble. Just a few minutes ago they were not working well and I made the comment “you are going to lose your marbles”. SM is here and came in and said, “Do you realize how that sounds?” LOL! It gives new meaning to someone crying out “I’ve lost my marbles!!” The children will have their jar full soon for the first time since we started the system. When we go out for ice cream I wonder if we should get marbled ice cream?

quotable quote

J just came up with another one. "It is really quiet when you can hear your own eyelids blinking." He is very serious too, he maintains he hears them. Can you hear your eyelids blink? :)

addendum

This is the actual website of the man who has made the Shorter Catechism songs...click HERE.

Shorter Catechism set to music

As many of you know, our church's confession is the Westminster Confession of Faith. We have been learning the Shorter Catechism for some time now. J just got his certificate at the recent family conference for memorizing questions 1-38. I just ordered online a copy of the catechism set to music and am enjoying it tremendously. I thought some of you also might enjoy so wanted to post a link HERE. Enjoy!

History Lesson

As some of you know, the core of our schooling this year is our history program. We absolutely LOVE Mystery of History. And with the help of another curriculum Illuminations I am able to have our reading and writing, etc. center around what we are learning in history. It is a chronological history, taking in biblical and secular at the same time. What a marvelous tool it has been to help the children grasp a biblical worldview. Now when they read in the scripture of the Philistines, or Tyre, they have a cultural education of where those pagan nations were coming from. When they learn of the Israelites going after the false gods, they have more details to make the Scripture come alive. Why the prophets used certain phrases or terms might be because of the local culture, etc. Why was Rome such a world power by the time of Jesus' birth etc? History is His Story, so all must center around the work of the Lord in the lives of His people.

I thought that I would from time to time give you an update on what we are learning in our history program. I will title these posts "History Lessons". If you are not interested, you can just skip the posts, but if you are like me, you might realize that history is a lot more exciting than you thought it was as a child. :) Did you know that Elisha, the prophet Joel and Homer lived around the same time?

As you know from the "Olympic Night" posts, We just were studying the beginning of the Olympics as the Greeks would have originally had them. Did you know that was around the time of Jonah? Less than 10 years after Jonah was in the belly of the fish we now have the beginning of the Roman City. So this week we will be focusing on how Rome first built their city. Remember the Roman City and the Roman Empire are two different things. At first they were just a city only in part of Italy. As time went on, the Romans actually created the empire. Did you know that the first Romans were Latins and named their new settlement "Roma"? The children and I discussed different latin words that we recognize in our own language. So today we are learning about how they built a roman city. It really is quite fascinating to see how our modern towns are patterned after the early roman cities. Our main streets, blocks and grid are very much the same. Of course we do not have great walls around our cities nowadays as they did then.

As I am typing right now, my children are watching a video called Roman City by David Macaulay. It is giving them alot of details of how a roman city was built. I don't know about you, but I get excited about learning and passing on these things to my children...I sure hope that enthusiasm can carry over into their own passion for learning.

So there you have your first "History Lesson"!

JJ's gourmet cooking for us--an asian shrimp. It was YUM!
The Athenians
Happy Bday Bro!

I thought it was time to post a “this and that” post. Life has continued to be very, very busy around here. Our Olympic night was a huge, smashing success! Everyone loved it, and had such a great time. The Spartans and the Athenians tied so we had a tie breaker game and the Spartans ruled (aka, S, me and dear little Hbo). I will try and get pictures up when I can. For now there are a few above.

We surprised my brother after the Olympic night and had a birthday party for him. We enjoyed his time here so much. He will turn 21 while at basic so we thought we would give him and early birthday.

S’s Uncle John passed away a few days ago, so we ended up taking a whirlwind trip out to NC. We left Tues and returned late last night (Wed). We enjoyed spending time with friends and family (some have not seen in years!). The burial was a full military ceremony. I have never attended one before and it was quite something. The slow salutes, 21 gun salute, playing of taps, and presenting Aunt Iris with the flag really brought the tears. It was amazing to watch these young men in the army now giving such honor to one that had served our country many years ago. We will all miss Uncle John.

S’s parents are planning on coming to visit us sometime in the next few days, on their way back through as they head home. We are looking forward to their visit.

Today has been spent recovering (we are all so very tired and we have colds), doing school and cleaning up. The boys cleaned out the van for me, as well as several other things. They were my right hand helpers today. The girls helped too. I am thankful that SM will be coming to help me tomorrow, so hopefully we will be all caught up after then.

G’day everyone!

S E

JRE

H E

You are a Spartan! Be courageous! You have endured unbelievable pain and hardship to become a superior Spartan soldier and citizen! Taken away from your parents at age 7, you lived a harsh and often brutal life in the soldiers barracks. You were beaten by older children who started fights to help make you tough and strong. You were often were whipped in front of groups of other Spartans, including your parents, but never cried out in pain. You were given very little food. You are fierce, capable, and strong.

Spartan Goals and Behavior at the Olympics: Win at all costs. If you can't win, at least beat your archrival the Athens. Dress alike with matching arm bands or buttons. Be loud but polite to your teacher who is your superior officer. Be on time. Be disciplined. Keep records. Make up a chant for Sparta, and chant it, while marching in unison, wherever you go. Make up a secret salute, and salute your fellow Spartans. Go Spartans!

JJ M

JD E

D E:

You are an Athenian!

Be courteous. You have been superbly educated in the arts and the sciences, and trained to be extremely productive and capable in times of peace or war. You are an achiever. Until age 6 or 7, you were taught at home by your mother, or by a male slave. From age 7-14, you attended a day school in the neighborhood where you memorized Homeric poetry and learned to play that magnificent instrument, the lyre. You learned drama, public speaking, reading, writing, math, and perhaps even how to play the flute. You attended four years of higher school, and learned more about math and science and government. At 18, you attended military school for two additional years! You are very happy to be an Athenian! Famed for its literature, poetry, drama, theatre, schools, buildings, government, and intellectual superiority, you have no doubt that your polis, Athens, is clearly the shining star of all the Greek city-states.

Athenian Goals and Behavior at the Olympics: You know your archrival, those horrible Spartans, will do anything to win, but you are Athenians Cooperate with your fellow Athenians to defeat those brutish Spartans, and do your personal best! Say witty things to impress representatives from other city-states. Be courteous to all Greeks, no matter what inferior city they represent. Make up a clever chant for Athens, and sing or say it each time an Athenian wins an event or a makes a witty comment. Shake hands with your fellow Athenians, whenever you greet them. You are Athenians, the clever, creative, courteous representatives of that shining example of all that is fine and noble, the polis of Athens. Go Athens!

JC M

R E

N M:

You are a Corinthian!

As a coastal city-state, you have a glorious history as a cultural and trade center. Although your schools are not as fine, perhaps, as those of Athens, you have been educated in the arts and the sciences. As a child, you were taught at home by your mother, or by a male slave. From age 7-14, you attended a day school near your home where you memorized poetry and studied drama, public speaking, reading, writing, math, and the flute. You attended a higher school, if your parents could afford it. You also went to military school for at least two years. Your polis is famous for its bronze statues, pottery, and vase painters. You are creative problem-solvers. To solve the problem of foreign money pouring into your coastal polis, your city-state created it's own coinage, forcing traders to convert their coin at your banks. (For a fee!) To solve your problem of unemployment, you created a huge and successful public works program. Literature, culture, art, and businesses thrive in your city-state. You are glad to be a practical, productive Corinthian!

Corinthian Goals and Behavior at the Olympics: Do what it takes, and be honest about it. You cheer the winner of each event, whoever that might be, and greet your fellow Corinthians with warmth and good sportsmanship whenever you see them. You do not need the nonsense of secret handshakes or salutes. You roll your eyes each time you see one. You are Corinthians! You are confident of your abilities, your achievements, your honesty, and your obviously superior city-state. Go Corinthians!

R S (neighbor)

E E

W E

You are a Megarian!

Be happy that you are a Greek and come from such a respected city-state as Megara. As a coastal city-state, your history is similar to Corinth's, your neighbor. You believe your schools are as fine as those of Athens, although you have no doubt that any Athenian would disagree. You have been trained in the arts and the sciences. As a child, you were taught at home by your mother, or by a male slave.

From age 7-14, you attended a day school near your home where you memorized poetry and studied drama, public speaking, reading, writing, science, poetry, the flute, the lyre, and a great deal of mathematics.

Like most Megarians, have been trained to be an excellent accountant. You attended a higher school, and went to military school. Your polis is famous for its glorious textiles, which are the envy of other Greek city-states. You have, of course, your own coinage, an idea you copied from Corinth.

Literature, culture, art, and businesses thrive in your city-state. You believe you offer your citizens even more freedom than Athens. (After the Peloponnesian War, Athens' famous philosopher, Plato, moved to Megara, where he remained for 10 years, so perhaps you are right! You also founded the city of Byzantium, also called Constantinople, now called Istanbul, way back in 630 BCE.) You are happy of your city-state's past and present achievements, and glad to be a Megarian!

Megarian Goals and Behavior at the Olympics: If you can't win, help Corinth to defeat those boastful Athenians and those militant fanatics, the Spartans. If it comes down to Athens or Sparta, cheer for Sparta, loudly. (They might be militant, but those are good friends to have in time of war!) You are Megarians, glad of your history, your flourishing businesses, your world famous textiles, your freedoms, your schools, your coastal advantage - your rich and vibrant city-state, Megara.

Now on to the games!

First and Second day of school

These are pics of our first and second day of school, for those of you who do not have access to the slideshow...
