it was a full day....

Just dashing off this blog post. Yes, I am still here! Have had company for several days and been oh so busy, but then what’s new? What with last Friday going into town to watch Travis street preach, having a picnic lunch, hanging out till Travis’ graduation in the evening..it was a full day. What with D’s 5th bday party on Saturday... it was a full day. What with having the singles over late Lord’s evening after the normal full day... it was a full day. What with going to the mountains with the Av family and my dad, Travis and Anne-Marie..hiking 6 strenous miles (yes D and H did too!) to see the absolutely gorgeous Rainbow Falls... it was a full day. What with recovery Tues and still having company, prayer meeting last night... it was a full couple of days. What with today cutting six little heads of hair and deciding to meet the V family out to go strawberry picking, picking 6 gallons, and then going back to their house to play, visiting while processing and cutting up to freeze 16 quarts of strawberries, coming home fixing dinner, cleaning two bathrooms... it is a full day! What with having company again tomorrow, leading a scrapbooking class Saturday, having a dh birthday coming up and having 12 people over for dinner that night, prayer meeting Wed night, a wedding the following Saturday…it is a full life! :) I hope to get a slideshow up of our memorial day trip soon, I also have D's bday pics to process…as soon as I get some spare time. :)

Slideshow of end of the schoolyear ceremony

Pictures of last night...

These are pics for those of you who cannot view my slideshow that I will be putting up.

This is what E read...

School has ended
And summer has begun
Oh what memories
Of all that we have done.

We have learned math
And science, wrote letters
Read books,
We wrapped dolls like mummies
How funny they looked!

I liked school
Especially to read
The more I practice
The faster my speed.

Thank you to our parents
For teaching us each day.
Thank you to the Lord
For leading our way!

End of the schoolyear report

Last night we had our traditional "end of the year ceremony". It was a very fun and special time. For those interested, this is the end of the year report that I read...
``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
This has been a very special year for our household. Being new to the area and settling into our new surroundings has made for some interesting beginnings of our homeschool experiences here. We enjoyed some great field trips this year. We began with a trip up to Washington D.C where we went up in the Washington Monument, went to the Air and Space Museum and wove our way around the city where our government seat is. Watching a DVD tour of D.C afterwards just cemented what we had just seen and gave us more info on what we had not been able to see. Later in the year, taking time to watch the inauguration and watching Mr Smith Goes to Washington taught the children some of the inner workings of our land. My children could probably filibuster now if they wanted to!
While in that area we all went to the Mannasses Battlefield in Virginia. It was there that Thomas Jackson received his nickname “Stonewall”. On our way home we visited Lexington where we toured the home and saw the burial place of this godly general that was such a pivotal part of our history.
We also enjoyed a field trip to the Walnut Grove Plantation where the children saw many demonstrations such as candlemaking, caning, coopering, etc. They also saw a re-enactment of one of the battles in the Revolutionary War.
Another stop on our field trip journey was to Haygood Mill where they also saw different pieces of the past. A huge working mill was the highlight of this special place.
We enjoyed our family history course this year called Mystery of History. Coloring pages of Nefertiti, drawing Stonehenge, looking up silkworms on the web, wrapping our stuffed animals and dolls like mummies, and having a china night all solidified what we were learning. Listening to stories of little children of the earliest settlers in these early lands was fascinating to the children. Hearing a portion of Homer’s Odyssey and learning of the Trojan horse and where that all stood in light of Biblical history was amazing.
We also read two novels aloud this year. Cabin of the North Woods taught us just how hard the westward expansion was and how difficult it was for those that tried to settle on the Oregon trail.
Carry on Mr. Bowditch taught us much about the life of this great mathematician and scientist. The lessons of perseverance and diligence were outstanding. We also learned different nautical terms as we followed his adventures at sea.
Another highlight of the year was the sewing classes that all four children enjoyed. They learned a lot and had so much fun experimenting. I think a whole new world was opened up to them as they learned they could create many things with this wonderful tool!
E:
Our dear little E began her first official year of schooling this year. While she enjoyed some coop classes last year, she really had not had any formal schooling until this past fall. She was very eager to begin her studies and applied herself with gusto. At the beginning of the year she did not yet even recognize all the letters of the alphabet. But she very quickly soared and became an efficient little reader, surprising us with her ability to catch on speedily. She began to love decoding the words and found her world opening up around her as she learned to read. It was not long until she moved from Phonics Pathways into several different readers. She sped through “It is Fun to Read”, “Pets and Pals” and “A Time at Home” in the Christian Liberty press series. Then she moved on to our favorite Pathway Publisher series reading “First Steps”, “Days Go By” and “More Days Go By”.
E also sped along in her writing abilities, doing scripture copywork as well as other writing assignments. Towards the end of the year she has even begun practicing cursive lettering.
In her math E has quickly picked up on basic addition and subtraction and faithfully has persevered each day on her fact sheets.
She has been an eager participant in our Mystery of History course. Often she is the one to pipe up during a quiz with the answer. I think one of her favorite times was when she wrapped her doll up as an Egyptian Mummy.
In science E enjoyed reading various science textbooks with her sister, listening to mommy’s read-aloud science times, and watching science programs. She is also an eager participant in all the outdoor excursions of the family, always spotting a beautiful rock or flower to be brought home or saved for later.
All in all, my dear E has been a joy to teach this year. She has advanced so quickly that I am pleased to skip a grade with her, placing her in the 2nd grade next year. Well done, E! We love you very much!
R is a pleasure to teach and a very cheerful student. This year she has also skyrocketed in her reading abilities. She went from an early reader to a much more accomplished reader. Here is a list of what she has read this year:
Days Go By
More Days Go By
Busy Times
More Busy Times
Laura’s Pa
Climbing Higher
Sheltie, Double Trouble
New Friends
Grandma’s Attic
Jigsaw Jones
B is for Betsy
Betsy’s Boys
Betsy’s Little Star
Betsy’s Playschool
Primrose Day
As you can see, R has had her little nose in a book quite a bit this past year. She will learn so much through this ability!
R also excelled in cursive writing this year and has enjoyed several different writing projects such as scripture copywork, letter writing, etc. She copied a large portion out of Genesis where Rebekah was brought to Isaac. This was very wonderful for R to learn about the this godly woman.
In her math, R also was very diligent in working on her math facts each day through different printouts. She learned multiple addition with carrying, subtraction, missing addends and went on to multiplication.
She did well reading science to her little sister, and enjoyed the science programs that we watched. She also eagerly participated in Mystery of History. She loves chanting the different key dates that we have learned over this past year.
Well done, R! We look forward to 4th grade next fall.
W has had a productive year of learning. He has a bright mind and sharp eye for detail. His keen interest in the scientific world continues to deepen. I find him in his spare time absorbing a fascinating volume from our science resource shelf, or down in the shop putting to practice all the ingenius creativity he has read about.
He has done a marvelous job at persevering through Saxon 5/4. Daddy has been working with him a couple of evenings a week and he has continued with his assignments throughout the day. Mastering long division, two-digit multiplication, working with fractions and decimals, roman numerals and geometric solids is no small task, but W plowed ahead and has done commendably.
W has also done a lot of reading this year, becoming even more proficient in his ability. The list of books he has spent time in are:
The Wright Brothers
Trumpet of the Swan
Song of the Brook
The Secret of the Maple Tree
Sir Isaac Newton
Gentle Ben
Tut’s Mummy
Duncan’s War
Rebels Keep
Kings Arrow
The Boxcar children series
The Jigsaw Jones series
Derwood Inc.
W also kept up with current events from a biblical perspective reading through the News Current, a publication of God’s World News. This was very helpful in understanding from God’s view what is happening around our world today. It also kept us abreast of unusual happenings, for instance, Zac Sunderland the homeschool boy who is seeking to be the youngest person to circumnavigate the globe by sailboat. (He is nearly home, by the way and we had the exciting opportunity to watch live via webcam as he went through the panama canal. We actually saw the level of the water drop and saw close-ups of his boat with the American Flag).
W worked in Bob Jones English 4 this year and also worked on his cursive writing skills. He worked on letter writing, a personal narrative, an instructional narrative and a book report.
W also completed Investigating God’s World, reading about light, the earth, the sea, energy and engines, the sky, a variety of vertebrates, science and great Christians, and so on… but his favorite kind of science is, as always, the hands on! He also enjoyed various science video instructionals throughout the year.
W also learned so much during History this year. I think his favorite part was probably our Chinese night, when we sought to drive home what we learned about the Shang Dynasty and the silk worm. We dressed up in our silkiest fashions, played Chinese music in the backround, and ate Chinese food with chop sticks.
W, you have done well this year and we look forward to next year as you begin 5th grade.
The scripture speaks of Joseph as being a fruitful bough and our J has certainly had a fruitful year. He has completed Saxon 8/7 and is ready to go on to Algebra ½ next year. He has enjoyed his sessions with Dad in the evenings and diligently applied himself to his work during the day.
J continues to devour everything in print he can find. This year he tackled some real classics as well as historical fiction novels. The list is as follows;
Around the World in 80 Days
The Little Regiment
Huckleberry Finn
The Cat of Bubastes
The Young Carthaginian
Johnny Tremain
Letters to Young Men
The Jigsaw Jones Series
The Boxcar Children Series
J also enjoyed the News Current where he could keep up with what was happening all around the world and learn how to view it from a biblical standpoint. There was much instruction to be learned from Fidel Castro, President Obama’s inauguration, etc.
J also completed 7th grade Life Science this year. This was a challenge for him, as it advanced him quite rapidly, but he did very well. He worked through organism classification, cellular biology, genetics, creation vs. evolution, microbiology, botany, zoology, ecology and human anatomy. J was tempted to be discouraged by the depth of this course, but he persevered and learned amazing things about our Lord’s creation.
J also enjoyed our history classes and it is a blessing to know that he will be able to connect the chronology both of the biblical and the secular events and outworkings of God’s providence throughout early history.
J worked though English 6 of Bob Jones,
Even though it was not his favorite subject, he kept working though it. He also wrote a personal narrative, persuasive essay, and a historical fiction on Robert E Lee. J also has been learning to type this year and is looking forward to using that skill more and more as his speed increases. One of his favorite pastimes now is playing the typing games on Mavis Beacon.
Last but not least, J entered the world of Logic this year. Using the book The Fallacy Detective he learned how to recognize bad reasoning. Using such terms as Red Herring and Ad Hominem, Tu Quoque, circular reasoning, weak analogies, and propaganda were all discussed. This was a great course for J and he did it well.
Congratulations Son, for a job and year very well done! Since you have actually been doing many things above your grade level, we are pleased to advance you to 8th grade, rather than 7th this year!
D, you have been an eager participant in whatever you could be a part of this year. You are eager to join in the fun this next fall as a Kindergartener. You are learning so many things already and were delighted when I introduced you to some beginning phonics briefly. You loved it when I printed out shapes for you to match and your favorite thing to draw now are pictures of Daddy, complete with beard. Your bright smile is a gift to all of us!
H, you have kept us ALL busy this year! You eagerly learn all that you can absorb. You are a very, very busy little one and your favorite thing to do is help in the kitchen, especially if it involves water, cracking eggs, or something hands on. You already know how to recognize the letters of your family, and can write your own “H” signature. We love you dear, sweet girl!
In summary, this has been a fun, fruitful year full of many blessings. We have learned, laughed and loved together. May the Lord be praised for giving us another year of instructing our children at home.
Mountain Retreat
S and I had an absolutely marvelous time away last Friday night and Saturday. We said goodbye to the children and headed to NC. It only took us about an hour to get to our destination and we were in the midst of beautiful mountain country. We checked into our nice hotel room (with a jacuzzi!) and went and had dinner at Outback Steakhouse...mmm,mmm good! After a bloomin' onion, bread, steak with lobster sauce over it, a salad and loaded baked potato...I was stuffed! An added blessing we had not planned on was that the hotel had a delicious looking pool. So, after dinner we headed to K-mart to buy something suitable to wear in the pool. We had not packed anything, because we had not anticipated swimming. When we got back there were some people in the pool, and we were only going to swim if no one else was there. But, after about 10 minutes it was empty. The water was like bathwater, it was so warm and refreshing. We felt like kids again, splashing and swimming, trying to do the tricks we did when we were young. It was completely private and could not have been better!
I have always loved staying at hotels, so I enjoyed every part of the "hotel experience" to the fullest. It was so wonderful to just have time the two of us. We have not had that in years and was so very refreshing and needful.
We decided to forget the breakfast the next morning and just sleep in. :) After doing so, we got up and went for another morning swim. Headed out close to noon for brunch at a Dennys. We then went to a place that had been recommended to us by one of our church friends. It was somewhere around 250 acres of private property of a famous poet who died in the 60s by the name of Carl Sandburg. But, it was so beautiful it had been turned into a national park. There were hiking trails up the mountain, ponds and lakes. It was absolutely beautiful. We ended up hiking nearly five miles, which leads up to a funny story...
We started up Big Glassy Mountain trail not realizing how long and hard of a climb it was. It was nicely prepared trails, but steep for long periods of time. We were huffing and puffing and I was asking S how much farther we were going to be going. We noticed an elderly man probably at least in his 70s coming down the mountain. It caught our attention as he came down. Well, we stopped and splashed water on our face and were absolutely feeling winded and tired, when who do we see? The same man coming back UP the mountain again! You should have seen how S and I looked at each other. It was so comical! We thought, "Wow are WE really out of shape!" So on we go. Our little old man stopped to talk with some ladies who offered him some water so we passed him by. But, shortly, here he came again, catching up with us! I turned around and said to him "I want to know how you are doing this?" He then explained to us that he did this 4-5 times a week, climbing up and down the mountain trail several times. The most he had ever climbed it at once was 5xs!!! Today he was doing 2xs. We asked him about how much farther it was (remember I am huffing and puffing). He says "Oh, we are about half way." GULP! But, we had passed the hardest part he says. For the rest of the trip up, he stayed with us and we visited. That is, he talked acting like we were taking a stroll, and I huffed and puffed. I wasn't going to say anything in front of him, but S knew I was struggling, so he was trying to gently help me along. (Lest you get the wrong idea, S was sweating buckets himself too!) We find out the man is a Christian and grew up near the same town S's dad did. They knew of the same stores and surroundings. When we got to the top the view was spectacular and we enjoyed God's beauty. I was glad to sit on a bench! After visiting a little more our little man said goodbye to us, saying with a wink that he was going to beat another man that had just headed back down to the bottom of the mountain. So, S and I headed back down ourselves. I tell you what, going down sure if better than going up! But, it was a fun adventure and oh, so beautiful! We saw some beautiful mountain laurel flowers. When you examine them you see God's mighty order and beauty. Each flower has the same amount of sides, and inside are ten little stems that are hooked until they open up and unfold. Their perfection awes you as you see how great our Creator is.
After our fun hiking experience we went into downtown Hendersonville. We got a Marble Slab ice cream and walked the quaint downtown area a bit. Then, it was time to head back to get our children. We picked up pizza to bring for all of our supper and were met by happy, smiling children that had a great time with Mamamo and Bapa, but were SO glad to see us.
Tomorrow evening we are having our end of the schoolyear celebration, with Mommy's written report that she reads, diplomas and awards given, as well as gifts. We top it off with yummy ice cream! TTYL!
Breaking News Flash
This just in...
Our sources report a celebration occurring at the E household. Handshakes, kisses, and congratulations are going around. Saltwater taffy and chocolate eggs are being consumed. There is much relief as they have finished the 2008-2009 school year. "It was a busy year, but we had alot of fun", said Mrs E. The boys of the household are especially ready to begin their summer careers of frog catching, tree climbing and river swimming. The girls as well are ready to enjoy this new season of refreshment. "But as for me" says the youngest boy of the family, "I can't wait to begin Kindergarten in the fall!" All in all there is a great sense of expectation as they look towards what lies ahead. The principle of the school, Mr SDE feels a great joy and delight in all the work his pupils have applied themselves to this year. The entire family would like to give glory to the Lord who has sustained and helped them. An end of the year ceremony will be forthcoming. But first, the teacher and the principle have a going away party of their own this weekend. Enrollment for the 2009-2010 school year begins sometime in the future.
Tomorrow...
Remember that song? "Tomorrow, Tomorrow, I love ya, Tomorrow, it's only a day away..."
I am SOOO excited about tomorrow. You see, tomorrow is our last day of school! Yippee. We are ready for summer break. So, the children have been finishing up their books, tying up lose ends this week. J just came in and informed me that he had finished his last lesson in Saxon 8/7. Both boys will have a test tomorrow and be done. So with the last minute finish up of the other books, my children will have completed 6, 4, 3, and 1st grade. Next year I will be teaching 7th, 5th, 4th, 2nd and Kindergarten. Whew! They are growing up so fast.
Also tomorrow, I get to go on an overnight get-a-way with my dear husband. Mom and Dad are keeping the children and we are heading about an hour away to Hendersonville, NC. It is beautiful up there and we have reserved a very nice room. It has been a long time since the two of us have gotten away together like this, so we are very excited. The children are excited about time with Mamamo and Bapa too, so it should be fun for all.
Today I have lots of things to do to prepare...run to the store, return library books, laundry, etc.
So must run, ttfn (that's ta ta for now :) )
Splashin' Saturday
We had so much fun down at the river on Saturday. The pics are posted backwards. Because we have had so much rain, the river that day was all stirred up and muddy looking, but at other times it has been so clear you can see right to the bottom. We will have to take some pictures of how clear it can be sometime but for now...
here is my little beauty queen. W was motoring out...
our landlord/neighbor/and most of all friend, came and joined us for a refreshing swim. The girls had fun running upstream and floating down with the current to be caught by Mr Randy.
memories
I think it must be about naptime when my 3 year old comes up to me and tells me that her ears are tired!
On another note...it was the sweetest sight to see J trying to teach D how to ride a bike...J was positively beside himself with excitement. D doesn't know it, but he will be getting a bike for his bday in just a couple weeks.
Speaking of bikes...S got me a bike for mother's day! I had pulled out his bike the other day and ridden it. I had not ridden in YEARS, I mean YEARS...like I don't think since we have been married. Anyhow, I realized how fun it would be to try and do family bike rides. So, S got me this beautiful 15 speed. Next we will try and get a baby carrier for H, teach D how to ride and we will be set!
Today I am very busy reordering things since SM has moved. The final push for finishing up school, laundry and daily life...makes for a busy, busy day here at the E homefront. Tonight we are meeting my parents to celebrate Mother's Day and their recent anniversary.
Pics will be coming soon of our fun afternoon at the river on Saturday!
G'day!
Another season...
This is a picture of SM holding our Pastor's baby at church...
Well, the time has come. Today I am losing my helper. :) SM is loading up as I type this and heading over to start a new life, keeping house with her brother in the home he just bought. We are going over to see their place in a little while. It sounds like it is really a nice place and I am very happy for them. We tease them that it is our new summer villa.
I will miss having her companionship during the day. It's funny, SM is such the morning person, and I am so not. So she would already have been bustling about before I made my appearance in the mornings. A pot of coffee would be brewing. And I don't know, but there is something very comforting about that, that I will miss. And yes, now I have to get used to cooking and doing laundry again. Actually, this summer we are going to be focusing on some more training of the children so that they can get quite proficient at these things.
Last night we had a housewarming party for them. It was a fun time to get together, fellowship, bless them with gifts, and enjoy yummy desserts! So I wish the Lord's blessings on this brother and sister during this new chapter of their life. I am glad they are living only 10 miles away and will be popping in and out often.
So our plans for today? Going over in a bit to SM and J's place. Then we are coming back over here. I think if the weather holds out we are going to try and go down to the river for a swim. The girls will get to wear their new swim dresses in the water for the first time. We are celebrating Mother's day on Monday with my parents, but S mentioned he might want to do some things for me today...so we shall see. And then tonight S wants to let the boys watch The Patriot. We got a new device called ClearPlay. It is a DVD filter that takes out bad language and violence, etc. It is wonderful! So, we are going to let them watch a filtered "The Patriot". It really shows what the men went through in SC to fight for our country's freedom. And I think it is important for the boys to be prepared should they need to stand for freedom once more.
Tomorrow of course is the high day of the week for us. The Lord's Day--the queen of days! We go up with expectation to hear from our Lord. What a blessing that we can gather with His people and be taught of our Redeemer.
Baking!
The girls a getting a bread making lesson this morning from SM. They are having a blast. Their favorite part? Being told "you don't have to be gentle" when they knead the dough!
new website for our church
As many of you know, the reason we moved here to SC was to be a part of our church. It has been and continues to be a huge blessing in our life. Our Presbytery has just put up a new website, that I thought I would post here for any interested. There are wonderful articles, plus more info about our denomination. Turtle Tales....
Meet Henry...named so because he was found in the Enory River. He now resides with two frogs in the newly purchase terrarium at the E home. Now Mama E does not need to continually provide plastic containers or other so called necessary items to provide homes for all these lovable creatures that are found by the smaller members of our family. There is particularly one little soon to be 5 year old boy who has an incessant love for these amphibians. Many a lizard has lost his tail or leg, many a frog seen his last moments in the hands of this not so gentle boy. They are his passion nowadays. Hopefully Henry's life will be lengthened because of his strong little home that he carries upon his back. For now, he seems happy swimming in his glass home waiting till the next time he is aggressively plucked out into the air to be carried about by a dirty faced little boys whose blue eyes widen at every little move he makes. So dear friends, without further ado, I introduce to you...Henry.
Take me to the River....
Years ago the children got Daddy a fish that sang "Take me to the river...drop me in the water." I was singing that this past Friday...
I decided to go on a walk with the children. We have a river about a 1/2 mile from our house. We meandered down the backroad through the trails that we enjoy going on. So far though we had not found a good access to the river. The boys on Friday explained to me that they had found a beach area if I would just go and see. So, I followed them and sure enough there was a little beach. What followed was one wonderful Friday afternoon having an impromptu river day. I sat on the beach and dug my feet into the sand and water. The sheer joy that my children had as they giggled and laughed was music to my heart. What a gift the Lord had given to us! Here are a few photes of our fun!
They played with frogs...
swam and swam...
splashed each other...
dug sand wells...
Here E is covering herself up...
more sand fun...
A Graybo mummy...
And Daddy got in and took them upstream on a river adventure!
They found the sweetest little new addition to the family. He now resides in our new terrarium. I will post a pic of him in the next post.
Springtime update
Here are a few updates of life on the homefront...
As we are now entering into our second year here, we continue to enjoy SC. The springtime has such a charm and beauty to it. There is something special about the evenings at this time of year. The air is filled with a sweet pine smell that reminds me of being up in the mountains camping. There just is something so beautiful in that aroma. And it is especially rich in the cool spring evenings here.
Our garden seems to be doing well. The children are excited to see little red berries on their strawberry plants. Our landlords baby chicks and turkeys are growing so fast. His horse Patty is also pregnant, so we eagerly anticipate a baby foal in our backyard in the new future.
We are chomping at the bit for that summer break from the studies. W finished up his math book a couple of days ago, so he is doing some refresher work with Dad now. J has exactly the ten day mark left in his book it looks like. They have devoured more books than I can remember this year. Yes, it has been a good year. We hope to be finishing up in the next 2-3 weeks. I can hardly believe next year I will be teaching a 7th, 5th, 4th, 2nd and Kindergardener! I am pondering what our curriculum and goals will be for next year.
This week we have been having a friend with her two daughters from church staying with us. They are going to Korea for 4 months. Her husband has been out of town this week and their stuff is all in storage now until their return. So we have enjoyed the sweet time together. I am drinking in my time with dear Esther because I will miss her so much while they are gone. I will be counting the months till Sept. when they return.
SM is going to be moving out next week sometime. She and her brother close on their house on the 6th. I am coordinating a housewarming party at the church to try and help them set up their house, because they do not have much to start out with.
Shortly after SM moves out, we will be having another visitor for about 12 days. Our friend Travis from church has been courting a young woman. She will be coming for his graduation from seminary and will be staying with us. We look forward to getting to know her better.
So today I have been cleaning house...and yay, I can breathe again! I always feel better when the clutter is put away and everything is fresh and shiny.
Tomorrow a friend of mine is coming over to help me sew some swim dresses for my little girls. I went to Hancocks the other day to buy some swimsuit materials and was delighted to see it was on sale! I have heard sewing on that kind of fabric is VERY difficult, but I will have an expert with me...so we shall see. If they work out, maybe I will post a picture of them. They are fun bright colors..hot pink for E, florescent green for B, and a baby blue pattern for H.
After we sew, my friends husband will join us for dinner tomorrow night...a fun day!
I will sign off for now, but I am going to see if there is a pic I can put up here today. Oh yes, this is a picture of W on his birthday this past March. I made them pancakes and he got a mouse! As I am finishing this up my older 4 are in the living room crocheting...they have really gotten into that the last few days! Thats all for now!
